Me and the roomies were chillen outside on our patio deck soaking in the cool ocean breeze while making every effort to drown out the bassy up and down beats of the mexican polka music coming from the other side of the fence.
Unsuccessful, we began migrating over to the calm of the "back office" to partake in a little extra cirrcular activity that grants every little annoyance an extra degree of entertainment. The three foot walk to the office hideout was suddenly interuppted by a blinding glimmer of light coming from the wrought iron table in the corner of the yard. I couldn't help it. Shiny objects grab my attention as do crystal blue waters infested with great white sharks, or the pulsing reflection of red and blue lights in my rear view mirror.
As I venture over, I discovered what appeared to be a foreign coin. Taken back by its unfamiliarity, a million questions began to race through my mind, like, "where the hell did you find this?" I began to recall the story one of my roommates shared with me about his travels to Jakarta, Indonesia, Cebu City, and Manila. Captivated by its origin, and how his knowledge of my parent's hometown expanded far greater than my own, I asked him about where he found the coin.
He preceded with a story about the Spanish settlers, and the foundation of the Catholic churches in the Philippine Islands before I could grab the steering wheel and lead him back on path.
"I haven't seen a peso since I left the Philippines. I don't know where that came from. Maybe Harold found it while he was rummaging through boxes. Let's ask him."
The next response confused the fuck out of me, as it was the first time Harold has ever seen that coin.
A smile flooded my face, as it slowly transformed into a nervously terrifying look of anguish. Now I needed a smoke.
